Antique Kitchen Hutch Transformation

About a year and a half ago, I decided that the layout in the dining area of our kitchen wasn't working.  I'd always wanted a little built-in desk in the kitchen so had moved our desk into it about two years after we moved in...but it took up too much space and didn't really wind up serving its purpose well enough to justify the amount of space it took up.  About a year ago, after pondering for months to figure out what the right solution was, it finally hit me.

Pretty Blue Island & Faux Marble Counter

When we toured our house for the first time in February of 2009, the kitchen was one of the main things that stood out to me.  It wasn't particularly fancy and it certainly hadn't been updated, but I loved the wall color and white cabinets, and it was bigger than the kitchen we had in our apartment at the time, so I liked it.

New Dress from Goodwill Shirt

So...it appears that I'm on a sewing streak.  Throughout the existence of this blog, I've tried to avoid posting too many projects from the same category in a row, but it appears that I failed in that attempt here.  Bear with me on this one; I'll change gears for the next post!

From Too Big to Just Right

It's embarrassing to say that this shirt has already seen a full year's (ok, one spring and almost two full summers) worth of wear.  It has been fully test driven and has held up well.

Pretty Polka Dot Kitchen Crock

Hello to you from the golf course!  Yep, I'm blogging as I ride along with the Mister while he and a few friends play a full 18.  Plenty of time to write a blog post and catch up on a bunch of old emails!

I found this ugly old crock for $.75 at Goodwill a few months ago.  I'd been looking for something to put on the counter next to the stove to hold a few of the spoons and spatulas I use the most, and this was perfect.  Except it was really ugly.

Thread Spool Dry Erase Board

The Mister got me this dry erase board for Christmas, and it was just a bit plain. I had the perfect place to hang it right between my giant bulletin/magnet board and the door to my sewing room, but I wanted to jazz it up a bit first. I thought of one of the first things I pinned on Pinterest when I joined it a couple of years ago and decided to do something similar.  So I pulled out some spools that were leftover from various other projects and got to work.

Button Clock

You know the saying - 'time flies when you're having fun'.  For me, that's especially true when I'm working in my Yellow Room (the extremely creative name I came up with for my sewing room - because the walls are yellow).  As soon as I get started on something in there, an hour immediately passes. Then I look at the time again and another 30 minutes have passed.

Dog Toy Box from Old Milk Crate

After we got our second dog about a year ago, the number of dog toys lying around the house multiplied and I finally got tired enough of tripping over them to do something about it.  They needed a home, even if they would still wind up spread all over the house over time.  I decided I wanted to find a cute wooden crate, attach some kind of feet to it, and toss all the toys inside - but not one of those unfinished ones from the craft store.  I've got a few of those storing other things around the house, but I wanted this one to be different.  After a few weeks of perusing thrift stores and yard sales, I finally found this antique milk crate on the second day of a 3-day estate sale.  We went by after a race one Saturday morning and picked it up for $30 - they gave me the third-day price at 50% off, saving me $15!

Lace Dress Refashioned from Antique Store Muumuu

Hello, long-lost little blog!  I found this dress made of beautiful blue-purple lace (or, blurple) for $2.50 at an antique store last fall and it has since hung in the closet waiting to see the light of day.  I'm not actually sure if it qualifies as a muumuu, but it's close, so I'm calling it that for now.  I thought I should hurry up and give it some attention while lace is still 'in', so decided to fix it up to wear to a friend's wedding last week.

New Vanity Chair!

Happy Sunday!  Dinner is in the crock pot and I've been on my feet all day, so it's time to sit down and write!

If you saw my post from earlier this week about the desk I turned into a vanity, you already know that I had trouble finding a suitable chair to go with it.  Well, I finally found the right one last week!  I’d taken our puppy, Pipsqueek, to be ‘fixed.’  Our vet is across town near where we lived when we got our first dog, Rocky, and I didn't want to drive back and forth across town twice that day, so I made plans to spend the time between drop-off and pick-up going to a few thrift stores and getting my hair trimmed, all within a 2 mile radius of the vet.  And I found The Chair at one of my stops.

New Vanity from Thrifted Desk

One of the projects I referred to in yesterday's post is the new vanity I made…in August.  I had the idea that I wanted to start back to blogging with this project after my unannounced break, and though I completed it in August, I kept waiting.  The main reason was that I wanted to wait to unveil it after I found just the right chair to go with it…but I had difficulty finding what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay, so I kept delaying.  Sure, I could have posted the vanity as it was and posted the new chair when I found it as a separate post, but I was convinced that I would find one quickly.  Days ticked by…then weeks…then months…and here I am in March returning to the blog…and I’m posting them separately anyway to keep the posts a bit shorter!  Oh well.  Now that you have (entirely too much) boring background information, I’ll get to the exciting stuff.

I'm baaack!

Hello again, online world!  I've been MIA for almost a year now, and though the three people who actually follow this blog know more or less what I've been up to in that time, I’ll enlighten anyone else who might stumble upon this post with a few of the basics.
