One Room Challenge: Week 5

It's Week 5 of the One Room Challenge!

There's still quite a list of things to do to get this room finished, and I am 100% sure there's no way it will all happen.  There are several reasons for this.  The main one is that we had barely arrived home from our Europe trip before it was time to hop on another plane to NYC for the Marathon!  That left very little time to get anything done in between the four loads of laundry, cleaning, unpacking, packing, etc. that must be done before and/or after any trip!

One Room Challenge 2016: Week 3

Greetings from the air over the English Channel!  We have spent the past few days exploring London and are headed to the northern coast of France next to visit the D-Day beaches in Normandy.

Here's a fun fact:  Accessing Blogger from a wireless connection in France causes the entire page, with the exception of my own text, to show up in French, which is a language I do not speak.  I can pick out a few words here and there, but even though I've been using Blogger for several years now and the page looks identical, except in French...I feel a little lost.  I'm also running off of about 5 hours of sleep from our late last night in London and early flight so don't quite have the brain power to solve the problem.  So this post will not be formatted the way I usually would at this point, but if I can figure out how to change this browser to English, things will start to look like normal again!

But the One Room Challenge must go on in spite of bad hotel wireless internet (bad internet, not bad hotels!) and foreign languages.

One Room Challenge 2016: Week 2

Welcome to Week #2 of the One Room Challenge!

Last week, I introduced you to our bright red laundry room full of dancing chefs.

The chefs are now gone.  The walls are now gray.  And it looks 100x better!

Daily Doodles: Week 10

This week's Doodle is a catch up from before we left for our big cross-country road trip.  The weekend before we started the journey, we went to visit my grandmother for lunch, so I decided to doodle a building in her hometown to give to her.

One Room Challenge 2016: Week 1

Hello and welcome to Homespun by Laura!  I can't believe it's been five months since my last blog post, but there's nothing like the One Room Challenge to give you that extra little push to get back on track!
During last fall's ORC, I focused on our upstairs office and learned that participating in the challenge kept me focused on the project, so I decided to join in again!  Click here for more on last year's Home Office/Sewing Room redo.

This year, I decided to transform our laundry room, which is about a fifth of the size of the office...so it can't be too hard, right? :-)

Daily Doodles: Week 9 and a Free Printable Recipe

When I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to share this recipe, I realized it was a perfect opportunity to catch up on some of my Daily Doodles.  I Decided to create an illustrated recipe card instead of just typing out a boring blank one.

Desert Shirt Refashion

This green and white striped shirt has been hanging in the refashion closet since I bought it for a dollar over three years ago.  It finally made its way back onto my radar recently when I moved my sewing room into the new office, and I decided to refashion it and wear it on our back roads cross-country road trip.  So far, we've enjoyed our time on the road and the surprises that each day brings.  Though we have an outline of where we're going and plans for how quickly we need to move on to the next town, we haven't set a strict itinerary and have been able to make random stops when we see interesting attractions, including one you'll read about below from the day I wore my new shirt.

Strawberry Basil Jam Recipe

It’s strawberry season, so it seemed like an appropriate time to share this recipe.  I found a couple basic jam recipes online a few years ago and over time combined and tweaked them to arrive at this particular recipe.

Daily Doodles: Week 8

Hi, blog.  It’s been awhile, and it’s time to catch up a bit.

For the last six weeks, we have been busy preparing for a cross-country backroads road trip!  That’s right – we’re driving across and through the entire country – all 48 continental states – without using the interstate!  To prepare, the house had to get cleaned, a plan for dogs and house care had to be worked out, and…well, the list was a mile long, but now that we are a week in to the trip, the stress of keeping up with that list has totally melted away, and the majority of the items on the list have now escaped me.  So now I’m blogging from the road – US 281 from Austin to San Antonio through the hill country of Texas, and it’s absolutely beautiful.  A great temporary office!

Daily Doodle: Week 7 and Two Free Coloring Pages

Week 7 of the Doodle project is long since over...but it's been busy lately, so I'm late in sharing.

A couple weeks ago, we hit the road and headed to Greenville, SC so I could attend the Maker Fest at the Children's Museum of the Upstate.  It was my first time going to any kind of maker event or craft market, and spent a lot of time preparing for the event in the weeks leading up to it.  My Doodling suffered as a result, but some Doodling is better than no Doodling!  Here's what I was able to do in Week 7.

Daily Doodle: Week 6

Well, I'm a week late in posting Week 6's Doodles, so it's time to catch up!

The focus of the series of Doodles I did this week was a view of the Central Park Boating Lake with the skyline of Central Park South in the background.  I took the photo during a bike ride through Central Park on our trip to NYC in August, and it made it onto my list of pictures I'd like to recreate in my Paint My Vacation series.  You have noticed by now that both of the subjects I've chosen for Paint My Vacation have been from the same trip to NYC last year, but I do intend to branch out to another location for my next one.

Daily Doodles: Week 5

homespun by laura daily doodle vintage rotary telephone watercolor
Hello again!  Week 5's Doodle post will include 5 Doodles, all of which turned out to be watercolors.  I'm really enjoying working with watercolors right now, and have even more planned for Week 6!  There's a bonus this week: In addition to five more Doodles, you get a recipe recommendation with February 3rd's Doodle.  And it's delicious!

DIY Medal + Trophy Display Shelf

The Mister and I met when we were 16 and on our high school cross country team, and running has been a major part of our lives ever since.  It only makes sense that it would be important to us to create a place to display the medals, plaques, and race bibs we have accumulated over the years.

Daily Doodle: Week 4

I fell behind a bit with my Doodles last week.  I had hoped to catch up by Sunday so I could finish January with an even (odd!) 31 Doodles, but came up short at 28 Doodles.  But that's 28 more Doodles than I've ever done in a month, so I'll take it!  Plus, I spent a couple of hours catching up yesterday morning, and have now pulled ahead - I have one extra Doodle in my sketchbook!

Daily Doodle: Week 3

The font is acting up at this time, so please forgive the weird random sizes and strange spacing if it shows up on your computer, too.  I've tried to correct it about six times, but it keeps doing odd stuff...and gets worse each time I save the changes!

I'm really excited to share this week's Doodles.  There are 9 in all; the first 8 were all done in preparation for the final Doodle of the week. It's the biggest watercolor (both in size and in detail) I've ever done.  In fact, the only time I've ever painted anything larger was this 2'x3' acrylic on plywood painting I did for our backyard a couple years ago.

One of the problems I've encountered already in my Doodle project is that I'll sit down to do a Doodle...and my mind goes blank and I can't think of a single thing to draw.  So I started a list of things to draw or paint - some quite simple, some more involved.  As I worked on my list, it occurred to me that I have a ton of photos of pretty sites taken on vacations, so I looked through some of my scrapbooks and pulled out a small stack of photos I thought would be fun (and challenging!) to paint or draw over the next year.

Daily Doodle: Week 2

homespun by laura daily doodle flamingo watercolor
I'm sitting here listening to a David Bowie record (yes, an actual record, complete with the sound of the needle scratching against it!) on the new record player I got for Christmas.  I finally set it up over the weekend and we've been listening to records ever since.  We have a small but cool selection, all collected from thrift stores, estate sales, and flea markets, and it's been a fun way to work for the past few days.

Daily Doodle: Week 1

homespun by laura daily doodle ladybug colored pencil sketch sketchbook
One of my goals for 2016 is to do some kind of art every day.  Anything that will help me to improve my artistic skills (as I haven't drawn on a regular basis since middle school) is fair game:  the Daily Doodle can be as simple as a quick 10-minute sketch or as involved as a full watercolor painting that takes two hours, or anything in between.

I technically have already failed at this goal, having missed a couple of days (a few of which I have already 'made up'), but I'm not worried about that.  I have plenty of time to catch up and finish out the year with 366 drawings (this is a leap year!)
